Core Support Fitness Classes
with Dr. Lesley Hoey, DPT
These classes foster the connection between your body and mind. They teach and promote awareness of how to effectively engage and coordinate the deep core system with a variety of exercises and movements you perform on a daily basis. The deep core consists of several muscles: the pelvic floor, spinal multifidi, respiratory diaphragm and transverse abdominus. Together, these muscles help with: breathing, posture, balance, pelvic organ support, bowel and bladder control, sexual pleasure and function. Sometimes these muscles go “offline” for various reasons and need some help to come back “online” to function more automatically as they were designed to do.
Classes combine body rolling, Yoga and Pilates based exercises which enhances overall posture, flexibility, tone, coordination, and strength while promoting a feeling of relaxed, energized vitality. Many students report feeling a difference after just one class. Some students have also reported other beneficial side effects such as decreased urinary urgency and leakage or even none at all. Many students report the improvement in awareness and ability to activate the deep core system improves their overall quality of life.
Classes are ongoing and intended for all-levels. Variations of exercises are provided putting you in control of exercising in a way that feels right for you. It is highly recommended to start with the 4-week class series, “Activate Your Inner Core-set” to learn and feel confident with the pelvic brace technique before moving on to the ongoing “Grace Under Pressure” core support and pelvic health fitness classes. The “Activate Your Inner Core-set” class series repeats monthly. You can take it as many times as you like until you feel confident activating your deep core. For those interested in deepening their exploration of their deep core they can continue learning and integrating with the ongoing “Grace Under Pressure” classes.
Class Schedule: Covid class discounts will remain in effect until further notice.
Activate Your Inner Core-set Class Series: This class series teaches students, step-by-step, to a technique called “the pelvic brace”. It consists of coordinating the activation and timing of your pelvic floor and deepest abdominal muscle, the transverse abdominus, with breathing. Together, these muscles help with: breathing, posture, balance, pelvic organ support, bowel and bladder control, sexual pleasure and function. In the first class students learn to engage each muscle separately before putting it all together in the pelvic brace. Since it usually takes some practice to get the hang of it, the three remaining classes in the series consist of guided exercises and functional activities to give each participant different ways to practice the techniques with time for questions and answers in each class.

“Grace Under Pressure” Ongoing Classes for Core Support and Integration:
One of the main functions of the deep core system is pressure regulation throughout the torso. Being able to regulate pressure throughout the torso, or lack thereof, can affect bladder and bowel control, posture, balance, low back pain, pelvic organ prolapse, separation of the rectus abdominus muscle (Diastasis recti), hernia and more. These themed classes emphasize and enhance a particular aspect of core support and pelvic health in addition to internal pressure regulation. Pelvic health is integral to overall health and wellbeing so the rest of your body, and mind, will benefit too. While a particular theme generally runs for about 6 weeks, classes are structured so you can join anytime. It is highly recommended that you take the “Activate” class series if you are not familiar with or need to review the pelvic brace technique.
